SIBO Occurs When Excessive Bacteria Populate The Small Intestine, An Area That Normally Contains Relatively Low Levels Of Bacteria. IMO Is Caused By An Overgrowth Of Methane-Producing Microorganisms, Known As Methanogens, Which May Be Present Throughout The Intestinal Tract. Elevated Methane Levels Are Commonly Associated With Slowed Intestinal Transit And Constipation-Predominant Symptoms.
Both Conditions Can Develop As A Result Of Underlying Medical Issues Or Prior Treatments, Including Acid Suppression Therapy, Antibiotic Exposure, Abdominal Surgeries, Motility Disorders, Autoimmune Disease, And Other Gastrointestinal Conditions. Without Addressing Contributing Factors, Symptoms May Recur Even After Treatment. If SIBO Or IMO Is Identified, Patients Should Work Closely With Their Healthcare Provider To Determine Appropriate Next Steps And Whether Additional Evaluation Is Warranted.
Symptoms Associated With SIBO And IMO Often Overlap With IBS And Other Gastrointestinal Disorders. Common Symptoms May Include:
• Bloating And Excessive Gas
• Abdominal Discomfort Or Cramping
• Heartburn Or Nausea
• Diarrhea And/Or Constipation
• Fatigue And Generalized Discomfort
• Headaches Or Skin Changes In Some Individuals
• Reduced Appetite Or Unintended Weight Changes Related To Malabsorption
Because Symptoms Are Nonspecific, SIBO And IMO May Go Unrecognized Without Appropriate Testing. Breath Testing Measures Hydrogen And Methane Gas Levels To Support Clinical Evaluation And Guide Further Care Decisions In Collaboration With A Healthcare Provider.
