UNDERSTANDING SMALL INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH (SIBO) AND INTESTINAL METHANOGEN OVERGROWTH (IMO)

SIBO Occurs When Excessive Bacteria Populate The Small Intestine, An Area That Normally Contains Relatively Low Levels Of Bacteria. IMO Is Caused By An Overgrowth Of Methane-Producing Microorganisms, Known As Methanogens, Which May Be Present Throughout The Intestinal Tract. Elevated Methane Levels Are Commonly Associated With Slowed Intestinal Transit And Constipation-Predominant Symptoms.

Both Conditions Can Develop As A Result Of Underlying Medical Issues Or Prior Treatments, Including Acid Suppression Therapy, Antibiotic Exposure, Abdominal Surgeries, Motility Disorders, Autoimmune Disease, And Other Gastrointestinal Conditions. Without Addressing Contributing Factors, Symptoms May Recur Even After Treatment.
